first, Nice fab, safety at it's finest

second... so how does it make one feel when the cab of the truck is ripped off, and they are rolling down the track like a ball

Having built many cages that would if hit right conceivably do that... I think when you walk away at the end you have one hell of a story!
I've often thought the if you are not using the cage to stiffen the chassis (I'm thinking one added to a rig rather then being the rig) that it is likely the drivers compartment that separates like this one did is going to actually be safer.
My thought is that you get away from the heavy missiles like the engine or axles, and you get away from the fuel tank... IF the hit was that hard you are likely better off elsewhere
In this case the cab was not influenced by the heavy chassis. A lot of the initial impact energy from the black truck was lost when the cab moved; had the cab been ridged in this case could it have retained its interior volume when the full energy load smashed into it.
One of my favorite physics question's is, "When an irresistible force meets and immovable object and neither mater nor energy can be destroyed what is the result?
In this case the white trucks cage was not immovable but the kinetic energy of the other truck was relatively more irresistible, so would the cage structure have retained it's shape? Thankfully in this case we will never know, and apparently everyone came through relatively well!

Lets take that cage, some beer, and a helicopter and we'll find out.

a new X-games sport!
Build a cage, strap in, then swing it with a krane and launch it like a bowling ball into cars stood on end as pins! Survivor wins!!!!

Do the cabs on those trucks tilt forward to access the engine?

either way IMO the design helped save that guys life it became a detachable compartment that separated from the main wreck , just like a fighter jet

Any body see the wreck at Pocono on Sunday? Straight into a solid dirt retaining wall at about 150 MPH, engine ripped completely away from frame and driver only had the wind knocked out of him and was released from the infield care center in about 10 minutes. Cage was a total loss as well as Busch's car, but no failure in welds or fabrication. Hats off to the Fabricators at Penske and Petty. As long as we go this fast we need fab guys who expect and produce 100% perfect welds everytime, both of those drivers lives depended on em and they came through with the goods this time.
