Warn 8274

Got one a while back, Getting ready to use it and decided to give it a rebuild and some paint before it gets mounted. I e-mailed Warn about stickers for it and they said they send them out free one time. Anyway i got them in the mail today.

Stickers!

I've toyed with getting that huge W for the hood of something!

Well its gonna be a little bit now. I had such a hard time getting the brake drum off, and my frustration took over caution and i crinkled one of the friction pads. So now i have to order some new ones. Also i had planned on using a freinds bead blasting cabinet, but found out he sold it a while back. So I will spend some time with a wire brush, then give it some paint.

Ok i got a few things going with this thing. I got around to ordering the parts i needed a couple days ago. I ordered them from here http://warnserviceparts.com/
However it looks as though they run this operation through these guys. http://www.redding4x4.com/ They say that redding will show up on your cc statement, and it did. It looks as though they sell refurb Warn products too.
It only took 2 days for my parts to get here. I read somewhere else that they were supposed to be really slow. Im happy to report that's not the case.

Here's what i got. On the left is the friction material i had to replace. It requires 2 P/N 9734. On the right is the Lower housing service kit. P/N 8680

On a basic rebuild you will probably only need the lower housing service kit.
You will see in the rest of the pictures that there's not much more to it.
1 seal, a couple plastic bushings and a thrust washer is all that will really wear on the unit. Since the friction material is used for holding and not slipping like brake pads or a clutch, It really doesnt wear.
If you have a really old version, it uses several small disk type friction pads. They are obsolete, But you can upgrade to the current version. They even make a kit for that. Brake service kit P/N 8409
I have the unit all cleaned and painted, Just not pics yet. I will take some of the re-assembly in the next few days as i get it together.
In the mean time here are some of the tear down pics.

This is what i used for most of the cleanup. Its just a scotch brite wheel on a dremel.

They said to allow 2 weeks but it took 3. I emailed Stepanie and she told me they were waiting for them to come in. I guess they ran out.
Did you email? If so you probably talked with Stephanie. She should be able to help you if you dont get them soon.
Sorry for not getting to you sooner. I dont seem to be getting email notifications anymore.

BTW i made a little progress last night and i took a few pics but they are still on the camera. I should be able to finish it up in the next few days. I will get the pics up soon.

Ok i got it back together tonight and have the pics to prove it. I think it came out pretty sharp for a winch that's almost as old as me.
Lets start off with a fuzzy picture of the free spool disengagement rod.

and the hole it fits in to.

I pulled this apart to clean it and didnt realize there was a ball and spring in there. So i spent 30 min looking for the ball that targeted the over head flourescent light first, After hitting that it made its way and bounced off several things before disappearing somewhere in the black hole that i have under my bench. Finally found it and promptly dropped it again. Another 20 min later and a little help from my kid i got it back together.
This is the brake assy. Its spring loaded and a real bear to put together.

I thought i was going to luck out since the 2 shaft keys were tight enough to hold the spring tension long enough to get the balls in place. That would have worked if i didnt have to hammer the end plate on. It was tight as well. several impacts of the hammer later and i had to start over with a new plan.
I was able to remove the shaft and brake assy from the unit and clamp it in place long enough to get the brake assy seated on the shaft. Then just spent some time with 2 screwdrivers to get the brass bushing and seal to seat. Oh and i had to fix this little gem.

I broke the tip off the only pair of snap ring pliers i had big enough to take this off. I ended up prying it off with a couple screwdrivers. Any way it got a little bent. Im going to replace that with a new one.

This is the plastic end cap. As you can see the ear broke off it at some point. It was there when i took it off but now, somehow its broken. The plan is to make a new one out of aluminum at work. For now im just leaving it off since i wont use this thing untill my buggy is done anyway.

I installed the lower part of the unit on the buggy to shave off a little weight. I hurt my back at work today so i was trying to take it easy. Then i went ahead and filled it with oil. I used 50/50 Gear oil / Lucas additive. If you have ever seen the lucas, then you know how sticky that stuff is. I figured this was the perfect application for it since the whole thing is lubed by oil "climbing" up the gears. That lucas is like snot and will work well in there.
It calls for 6oz of lube. I guessed at it. Basically i kept it below the seal but above the bottom of the gear. I guess the gear is about 1/2" to 3/4" deep in it.

Then i applied some silicone to the upper housing and closed her up.

Applied a little grease to the motor support bearing in the rear and installed the motor.

The final results came out nice IMO. Im happy with the colors. I just need to go back and touch up the bolt heads. I forgot to paint them before hand.
With the stickers and mounted.

If you look close you can see the "ribs" are shiny. I went over them with scotch brite to expose the original aluminum. Its hard to tell in the pics but it breaks up the color a little.

This sticker is straight, I promise its just the camera angle.

I didnt install the orange "Read owners manual" sticker and decided instead of putting the W on the control box cover, I put it on the motor instead. Up close the sticker looks like brushed aluminum. Im planning on mounting the relay box and cover under the hood somewhere since i have dash controlls wired up. This should keep them dry.
I basically kept this short and sweet and not really an installation guide since there are some nice ones done already.

one last re-visit here. Originally i had dropped the side dust cover for the drum and broke off one of the ears. The weather checked plastic was just too brittle. I was just going to order a new one....... But then i had an idea.

OLD BROKEN ONE

THE NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION

BACK SIDE

Im really happy with how it came out. There was a slight mis-calculation on the hole spacing, but i was able to open it up with a dremel. Once the screws are in you cant tell anyway.

Now it just needs a coat of black to fill in the grooves, a light sand to take off the surface paint and a polish and its done.
