Thumbs up Hot Rod Tin Work Thread... Lets see it

I was thinking it might be kinda of cool to start posting up those little Sheet Metal projects that others might want to use for ideas in the future. Maybe we could discuss little tricks of the trade and installation tricks and ideas. Heck I need all the help I can get. Besides it might be a little eaiser to find the little sheet metal jobs all in one place? If you have that project that you want to get off the ground but need that little nudge here is a good place to ask that hot rod S/Metal question. Feel free to dive in and show us what your doing without the fear of this thread being hyjacked.... Lets see where it goes?


With that said...

I spent yesterday playing around with a splash pan design for a 1930 Chevy. The tops of the fenders are pretty unsightly because of abuse of a drill. And no I didnt drill them! So a Splash Apron with inner fender overlays were in order. This is what I came up with... The Splash apron is 18 Ga. and the rest is 20Ga. Its not stock and not close to era correct but it is different and Mr. Customer seems to like it.

Post up your stuff as well, Id Like to see it.

How did you make the recesses for the hood clamps? It looks like they are stamped into it. Also what tools did you use to cut out the sheet?

I use the Beverly shear and hand snips for just about everything. It helps to have access to a cnc mill, a scanner, and a 10000 lb press. And Im not going to show my collection of stamping dies. Think Harley D and a few others might have an issues with that. I will show ya this one though.


Here are a few of the shapes I use a lot for just general stuff. and yes I know the Bowtie is backwards. that is the back side of that die. When its done correctly it is sunken in on the splash apron.

On your Chevy die, what aligns the two halves? I see no guide pins and given the size of the material you were using says they would work anyway. So, do you just guess the alignment?

I like your arsenal of dies though.

I bring the ram down on the two halfs under pressure. The top is fixed onto the ram. I release enough pressure to seperate the 2 halfs careful not to move the bottom die about a 1/4" and slide in the sheet metal. Stand on the peddle and watch it all sink into one, usually about 8000 PSI does the trick.

A little creativity and you can do anything.

I had a feeling those were stamped. Very cool! I wonder if I could make some dies like that bowtie on my manual mill. The angled corners would be tough.

Ok, A OFN freebie tip that I dont usually tell people about...

Mill out the shape you want into a fairly thick peice of plate or aluminum. Mill not much deeper than 1/8" to 3/16". Then place your sheet metal directly on the cut out die. Put it in your press with a thick heavy rubber pad on that. Rubber should be around 1/2" thick or so. Then put another thick flat plate between the rubber and the ram. Crank it down to about 8000 pounds for 20 Ga. and 10000 for 18 Ga. You will like what you see! You didnt hear it from me.

Wow! Cool thread. Thanks for the tip on doing stamping/embossing. I want to try that sometime.

I will have to look and see what I've got for stuff to add to this thread. The past couple months have been taken up building a new shop, so I haven't gotten to do much metalwork recently.

Here are some replacement interior panels that I made for a 63 Nove convertible.



And here is a not so great picture that kinda shows the floor that I made for my 37 Chevy pickup.




I too make those stamping tools for a lot of the sheet metal work that I do. I don't have any pictures right now but I will see if I can dig some up, I have at least 6-7 sitting under my press right now. They can be super handy for making factory appearing sheet metal parts.

20 Ga. with a 3/4" square tube frame sitting down in the floor recess. The original floor would have been wood so I had to make up for that thickness. I have made three floors like this but I don't have pictures of any but this one.

Here's a picture of the whole truck.

What is it about tranny humps that always makes me think. Maybe it because they all are different shapes, sizes and the room restraints usually suck. I think Tranny humps are my least favorite thing to fab. Lets see some...

I will post a few less-than-flattering pics of my sheetmetal "work". In s few pics you can see some 1" "lugs" poking out of the floor. the seat tube assembly slides onto them and will be pinned for easy removal.

All of this will be covered so care was not taken in many spots. Also, you can see the heads of bolts. The cut outs are to access the body mount bolts. I think I have 13 IIRC!!

I'd like to see more in this thread. I am about to start my first complete floor from scratch. Mostly just done modifications before.

I build 2 10 gallon fuel tanks and mount them under model A's. I use the original filling hole and run that filler tube through a floor console to hide it. It goes through the floor and T's into the tanks.
