If you can't easily disconnect the wire and slip heat shrink past one end, I definitely would not cut and splice just for the purpose of labeling.
Here's another type forgot about that I used a few times on machine wiring. Very similar result to the heat shrink type and you can make them on a laser or inkjet printer. You can buy sheets of them and they aren't particularly expensive. Each label has a white section you print on and a clear section attached that becomes a protective layer after you wrap it over.

One of the drawbacks of this label is it needs to be on a straight section of wire - you really don't want to bend the wire in the area it's applied because it is somewhat rigid.
