This weekend I installed a hitch receiver on my daily driver. Part of the install involves modifying an existing 1/2" diameter hole to create a slot shape for fishing carriage bolts and spacer/washers through the existing frame rails. The install called for the shape depicted below:
The Dremel seemed to be the only tool that fit in the space and I decided to try the "high speed cutter" tools that it came with (link here
). I have no experience with this type of cutter, but it seemed to work great at first. Unfortunately, they didn't last very long and stopped cutting, so I finished the job with some a grinding stones on the same tool which cut much more slowly.
Is a cutter like this the right type of tool to do what I was doing? If so, could I expect a carbide burr to last longer than few small slots? I'm thinking I'd like to have something like this on hand in the future and any tips for tool/cutter selection/use would be greatly appreciated!
