The official "magnetic brake" thread

We get bombarded with question about our magnetic brake. I will just start posting up applications in this thread as they come accross my desk.

I'm more interested in parts that can't be made on a conventional brake, though it's awesome to see the mag brake has that capacity.

When you "open" the top plate to insert material, how does it open? Is it attached at all when the magnet isn't active or do you just pick the whole plate up?

This should help illustrate how it works.

This is a sick bender indeed. One day I WILL own one. Cancer WILL NOT BEAT ME before I own one, I WILL gaurantee you that. I WILL make this little machine shop I'm trying to start succeed, and the money I earn from it WILL purchase me THIS bender for me. WHY on EARTH would I even attempth to start a machine shop after almost diying from Cancer, then still continue with the idea? Because you either go after what you want, or you don't, period. I want my shop to succeed, I want my cool machined parts to sell when I'm fully operational, and I want this bender, so I gotta work for it. Thats all there is to it. Doesn't matter how sick I am. I gettin this bender.

here is a project by one of our customers over on the lateral G forum. You will notice radius bending with a piece of solid rod as well as box bending......

There is not a single machine on the market today that can perform all of these functions at once.....except a magnetic box and pan brake.

Here is the thread: Woo Hoo It's Started! - Page 3 - Lateral-g Forums

IIRC it can improve the magnetic clamping.

So under what circumstances are there "6 tons of clamping pressure" ?

I understand that it gives full electromagnetic force when you start lifting the arms, but what does the upper magnet size have to be to get the 6 ton rating?

FYI there is no upper magnet. Only a lower electromagnet. The upper is just a piece of plate steel.
