I made a stand off with a piece of coat hanger wire, and used a small hose clamp to attatch it and it did pretty good holding the cup up off the metal. It looked kinda ghetto, but it did OK for a small job in a hurry. If you have a lot to cut, get the shielded consumable for draggin and save money. One or two sets of 60 amp consumables on a Hypertherm 1000 is not cheap and will pay for a standoff pretty quick.

Improvise

I like how you improvised.

Hypetherm also makes a standoff tip that you can use for this model.

Buy a drag-tip. They work awesome and last a very long time.

Also, I don't know what model cutter you have but Hypertherm makes several different tips for all their cutters. It helps to become knowledgeable about what is otu there as specific tips last A LOT longer and make much nicer cuts based on specific uses. Go to their website and look up your cutter and they will have a diagram with part numbers. Its worth it to experiment with different combinations. I have a Powermax 1000 and theres about a dozen or so possible tip combinations for mine. Using it on my plasma table and finding the perfect tip combo for that specific application made a world of difference!
