Is jimmygarison a robot or real?

Is jimmygarison a robot or real?

I see Jimmy chiming in on a few discussions. I am a little confused.

Cris-

I thought you were all knowing and powerful? How could this be?

Steve

TheBandit 08-09-2017 08:06 PM

I think he's a bot, but harmless so far. He has an unrelated advertising link in his profile/visitor messages from himself and almost every post starts with "hi, I am jimmygarison". Only a couple of his posts really seem to make sense, but they don't entirely follow the flow/context of the threads.

I say keep him for entertainment value until he develops his own language like the facebook AI chatbots.

I agree. I could use "Hi, I am Jimmy" in my technical support group.

TheBandit 08-09-2017 08:10 PM

As an IT technophobe, I find the whole "bot" thing fascinating and a little scary. Sometimes I do something really cool and complex at work and I feel a little arrogant and clever.... But all this stuff is so far beyond me it makes me feel like a bloody caveman. I reckon we need to adopt little Jimmy, maybe he is a kindly bot like the one in Short Circuit
Adopt a Bot week, bring your bot to work day, who knows, it could catch on

wyoming9 08-10-2017 05:00 AM

Well he does list a address

Maybe a dawn visit will answer the question .

A picture to post ??

My theory is that Jimmy is from a university or large corporation such as google. They are doing real world testing of how people react.

AI scares me too. I read that the tip-over for a truly self aware AI is anywhere from 10-30 years from now. Society is in the process of making a god in it's own image...that's what's scary. I may be alive when it happens. Truly, we live in interesting times.

R.DesJardin 08-10-2017 11:20 AM

He's not a bot, he's not a bot, he's not a bot. Ok, I feel better now.
Hi, I couldn't hear you there, how are you doing today? How would you like to sav................................

Seriously. I have one of those Amazon Echo systems at home. "Alexa" sounds like a real person but "she" is completely driven by software. As AI gets better and more and more devices become connected, it's only a matter of time before Alexa becomes Hal and starts launching nukes or bumps up the thermostat until I'm burnt out of my house.

The "connectivity of things", especially completely unnecessary connectivity (who the hell needs wi-fi enabled ovens and refrigerators?) is gradually making us more and more susceptible to cyber attack... what are we going to do when the cyber attack originates from AI?

Also how do I know that you aren't all bots??? How do you know I'm not a bot? How do I know I'm not a bot!?!?

Punk Steel 08-10-2017 01:25 PM

we know we are not bots, no technology yet has enabled a machine to talk as much utter bollocks as we do ;-)

R.DesJardin 08-10-2017 01:55 PM

Bot thoughts: Are you a bot?
1.A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2.A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

wyoming9 08-10-2017 08:15 PM

You forgot Rule # 4

A Robot will break laws 1,2,and 3 to serve the higher good of the Self Willed Machines

You need to look at the really fine print.

Bot for several reasons based on his IP. Just lookup Digital Ocean for one.

CarterKraft 08-11-2017 10:19 AM

It seems hes definitely a bot...

But for what, why? What does he sell steal etc?

IMO Somebody is testing how good their AI is. If it gets booted off the forum it gets a strike and they try a new algorithm.
Long term...lots of possibilities including; [the new "live"] "help answer desk", companion bots not just in old folks homes, anywhere a "front desk" is used online; taking orders for parts, interactive toys.
Lots of military uses come to mind too. I'd like to see young minds molded so they are less likely to become terrorists. <<< a very slippery slope....
But the probable use will be to make "better" consumers.

bullnerd 08-11-2017 11:43 PM

He/it just posted again.

Has his full address , right down to the apartment number.

Talks like a bot.

Scrambled 08-12-2017 09:44 PM

You would think the bots could sort the posts by date, and ignoring the older post. That is the only true giveaway.

Steve
