I have a couple designs running through my head and wanna see what others think. I understand that the bracing is not there. Just looking at the basic shape. Pics are from the main hoop to the back. 1 design uses 2 legs from the main hoop and the other uses a hoop in the rear with 2 legs connecting.
I am open to all suggestions and critisizm. Even if you think it would look like some rainbow flag San Francisco-mobile.:rainbow:

hoop version

This is what those will attach to.
main hoop

This one doesnt show it the best but basically the legs or hoop will come down the outside. Just on either side of the gate and attach to the frame. There are some more exo pieces that have to attach to these so it just has to come down the outside.

Okay, so reluctantly I'm going to post this. I know I'm going to get ripped on it though...

Just went in with a friend for some shop space. He's a wood worker for the most part, I fiddle with automotive stuff for the most part but we are both very interest in learning more about working with metal. We pretty excited to just cut shit apart and try to weld it back together. (I know, big aspirations right)
I've spent some time the past couple weeks reading about different saws and tools for the shop. I gathered some good information, but I don't know the "why" part of it.
I see that there are distinctions between saws and stuff but I don't see why?
What are the key differences in things like chop saws vs a miter saw when it comes to metal use? Why cant one be used for the other? The same question for a band saw? I don't suppose it's just a matter of throwing a metal blade on a regular woodworking band saw. Why? What's the difference in the two? (and how quickly would I hurt myself if I tried???)

I'm fine with you ripping on me asking what's probably an obvious question, but at least tag on a little info at the end of it. :):

Thanks guys!!!

I thought I'd share with you all a little project I built last week. I've been getting tired of my "old, small" steel rack. It had physical room to store everything I had, but a couple of the shelves had 8 different shapes/sizes of material on it and it was just getting to be too big of a PITA to get things on and off.

The old rack was built from all 1.5" round tubing. It has held up AMAZINGLY well. I never thought when I built it that it would hold more than 85 full pieces of material, but it held up great! It just wasn't big enough anymore though. Here's a shot from my old place.

So I went from a 4 foot tall rack with 5 shelves to an 8 foot tall rack with 10 shelves!

I drew it up in Solidworks and used cosmos to see what kind of material I could get away with, because material is getting so dang expensive. I wasn't too happy with the results of 2" 1/8" wall square tubing, but I liked the results of 2" 3/16 wall square. That lead me to build the main uprights and bottom shelf/foot all from the 3/16" wall square. The bottom shelf sticks out about 32" and they taper shorter as they go up. The side to side supports stick out 22.5" on either side, and are made from 1.75 HREW round tubing. The rest is 1.5" rnd.

The lower three shelves have a second vertical support as they are the heaviest loaded.

What do you guys think? I personally think the thing looks almost empty, even with quite a bit of material on it...

I am involved in a school in Myrtle Beach and we have a few different parts of the school working together on a '55 Chevy buildup. The car is to be raced in a classic car race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina Labor Day weekend. I've taken the lead in the class and employed Bendtech to help us along with some of the design.

Now this cage is supposed to look as close as possible to the cars from that decade which had pipe bent around trees from what I am told. So its simple and there are a few places I felt needed more bracing....but its not my decisions. Here are some recent pics of the progress:
I have been using Google Sketchup to do my brackets and rectangular stuff in and then transfering the diamentions to Bend Tech to get the notching information. Works ok but is would be easier to do it in one program.

Well some of you may or not have noticed I have not been on the site very much lately...and some of you could give a shit...LOL...

Just thought I would let everyone know what is going on.....Back in January I moved out of my 5000 sqft shop and took Xtreme back to the home shop. I just could not afford to have a shop out like that. As the economy slowly fell so did my sales. A little in debt and discouraged I pushed on. Until Gas prices and the economy forced me to have to start looking for a job for extra income. I thought about investors, partnering....etc.

I went and applied for a position with a local Restoration shop to do final assembly on Eleanor Mustangs...very cool, $20 an hour and 100% less stress....I though a nice place to regroup.

Met with the owner and immediately hit it off...for those of you local its Trinity Restoration. As it turns out Trinity is much more than a restoration shop, David had taken this mustang restoration shop from nothing to a $6M dollar facility in less than 3 years. Not only is there Trinity Restoration, there is "Brand new Muscle", " Trinity Motorcycle", full on Collision, Dent Doctor, a full mechanical shop, Cole Stevens Design...I was like holy shit man....anyway he said we do not really have a company under our umbrella that does Tube work, Chassis....etc. and asked me would you like to be that company, of course after asking around looking at my site and the OFN...etc.

I said hell ya and left the lunch thinking I either won the lottery or just had the biggest amount of smoke ever blown up my ass I ever had.....a week passed and they called and said lets get busy...I get a place to work in one of their shops, I discount my hourly shop rate by 40% and get a minimum of 40 hours a week. We contract each other to do the jobs. So what happened is David became my Salesman, marketer, and sole distributer. I still own 100% of my company and get 100% of all the work I bring in and parts I sell.

This gets better, they had been approached to build an hayabusa chopper and I sat in on the meeting and when those guys turned out to be squirrelly.....we decided it was not really a bad idea to build our own choppers....Trinity Motorcycle is one of 5 OCC dealers in the USA and also are dealers of Big Bear Choppers. So I am in the process of changing my name to Xtreme Fab & Customs.

This how it worked Cole Stevens "the Designer" and I sat down and came up with an idea for a chopper frame that we could either use a V-Twin or Hayabusa Motor in and we are currently working to build them for the Bikes blues and BBQ on Sept 24th to premiere them. I get paid to design and build the frame and sheet metal and assembly them, but I can also sell the frames bare and any products I create from the bikes....Cole get his cut every bike we do and Trinity get its commission for selling bikes....

I have never been happier in my career and look forward to great things in the future working under this umbrella....the fab shop and I are in the two old buildings but they have plans for another new building to move all of us into to....This next weekend, the OCC crew will be down to have a grand opening of the OCC Tulsa.....

I know, I know this post is no good without pictures......Here are the first concept drawings of both bikes......

I started my first tank on Friday, I will create a chopper forum here and start posting build pic's....

No I have not entirely forgotten about Off-road....but I have to go and do where the money is.....Xtreme still sells all the pro-tools, and tools I did and I still have the same great customer service. Just my name and type of fab has changed....

Now, I'm not going to divulge the details of the idea just yet, because if this works, I plan on mass producing it through a local company. I was going to post this on Pirate, but I wasn't up for the bullshit and flaming, so here goes.

The device I am intending to build requires a piece of 1.5 DOM tubing to slide inside of a piece of 1.75 DOM tubing. Now, I can get the pieces to slide in and out no problem...when there is not any lateral pressure on the tubing. Once one piece of tube is pulled up or down, they bind. I can still slide them, but its extremely difficult. . Now, I will say that this is a piece for a suspension, and it will see binding through its travel. What are some good ideas on how to keep it from binding. I've thought about having the 1.5 turned down a couple of thousandths, which would help. I've also thought of adding grease fittings to the outer tube, and cutting groves into the inner one to distribute grease. Now, through all of this, the MOST movement this piece will see in or out will be less than 6 inches. I just need to fight the friction for it to work FLAWLESSLY. I'll post up some more information once I've got a prototype built and installed on my rig.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. The tubing inside needs to slide unimpeded when under a lateral pressure. It can have some bind, in fact, the device counts on it a little bit, but it needs to be able to slide in and out.

Thanks,
James H.

I am thinking about buying these plans. I have a Volkswagen waterpump that i think is 1300cc (probably exactly same engine the beetle has), do you think the engine will fit in the chassis? what kind of gearbox will I need and where do I get all the things between the engine and tyres (gearbox, axels, hubs e.t.c)?

also where do I get steering equipment that will fit?

I live in Iceland, and my local scrap heap is not big.

Thanks for reading! and please comment.

Hypertherm and Thermal Dynamics being in New Hampshire it does get cold. Ok maybe not as cold as the Mountain west.

I have talked to both the area reps for those companies. Neither could answer my question. Why don`t you offer as an option a cold weather torch.

I must say I remove the torch it is in the warm 55 to 60 F It gets down to around 35 F or so in a few minutes when I go out in the shop to use the torch. It sucks as I am quite happy working in the cold

The torch is like a real cheap garden hose. I am afraid it will just crack and break. :shaking:

The shop area is just to big to think about heating.

Any thoughts or comments will be a great help Thanks

Subject: Guts or Balls
Guts or Balls, There is a medical distinction. We've all heard about
people having guts or balls, but do you really know the difference between
them? In an effort to keep you informed, and to alleviate further
confusion, the following definitions are listed below:

GUTS - Is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being met
by your wife with a broom, and having the guts to ask: 'Are you still
cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?'

BALLS - Is coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling
of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the
butt and having the balls to say: You're next, Chubby.'
I hope this clears up any confusion on the definitions. Medically
speaking, there is no difference in the outcome, since both ultimately
result in death.
