Is it safe to use standard abrasive cut off wheels and grinding discs with aluminum?

I remember at the shop in college they had dedicated grinders for aluminum and steel. If I recall correctly, the softer aluminum would "clog" the grinding wheel. If subsequently used to grind steel, the clogged stone wouldn't dissipate the heat fast enough and the wheel could come apart. Am I just making this up or is this a real thing?

I've been hearing about this through the American Cancer Society for the last year or two and it's finally made it to an actual proposition (Prop 29) to be voted on in June here in California. It's call the California Cancer Research Act. Here's a summary

Quote:

The California Cancer Research Act (CCRA) is a qualified ballot initiative that will be placed before voters in the next statewide election. Through a $1 per-pack tax on cigarettes, the CCRA delivers over $855 million per year to pursue potential cures of cancers and other tobacco-attributed diseases including Heart Disease, drive down smoking rates by investing in proven smoking cessation and tobacco control efforts, and assist tobacco law enforcement.

More info here

I can imagine there will be heated debate about this as it's one of the largest cigarrette taxes ever proposed. I am honestly conflicted about it, but I would say for the most part I favor the proposition because I feel it's in everyone's best interest including the people paying the tax.

It goes against some of my principles as overall I feel people have a choice and if they want to hurt themselves through smoking, drinking, rock bouncing like a madman, or whatever it may be, as long as it doesn't affect me, I have no business taxing them for it. They should have the freedom to do what they like. But in some ways it does affect me, not so much their smoking directly (2nd hand smoke not withstanding), but the benefit that would come from this tax. My mom, sister, and brother all smoked for long periods of time in their lives (mostly stopped now) and I would like them to have the tools they need to fight any related cancer or heart disease that comes as a result. Also there may be collateral discoveries through the funded research that help to fight other cancers like what I suffered from. I should also note that prior measures to get "Dont Smoke" material into schools was effective at educating and preventing me from becoming a smoker myself and I am thankful for that. Will $1 discourage smokers from smoking? Probably to some degree, but I don't think it really matters - the point is to raise money to fund research and prevention that will make a difference.

What do you think? $1 tax on cigarettes to raise an estimated $855 million toward smoking relates cancer prevention and research. Favor or oppose?

How much would you pay? And what would you reccomend I ask him about it? I don't have any more current info than what I've posted.and a pic. But I have his cell number and can text him any questions.

You might be interested as I have alluded to developing a unique line of suspension off road seats. My apologies for brushing off and skirting the PM's that have been sent to me asking specifics, I just wasn't ready to answer those questions until now. As many of you know we have been building custom Hot Rod seating for several years now and it seems the off road market has room for some new ideas and out of the box thinking. As a result we just started building a very high bolstered recline able off road suspension seat. It's bolsters are so high they are hard to get into unless it's a buggy style design where you climb down into the car through the window opening. These seat dimensions are very close to the Mastercraft's Pro series fixed back seats, only they recline. The issue with the Mastercraft seats is that they are just about the same as all the rest of the recliner style seats only with material suspension instead of springs. Not much difference unless your hauling Arse across the desert. I have also developed an air ride suspension that these seats will be bolted to and tested with. These seats will be going into a serious rock buggy for a local talk show host here in town. I'm sure The testing of this stuff will be done quickly and we should be in manufacturing mode very soon! A few pics... And un like Mastercraft these seats are made right here in the USA by yours truly! And did I mention just how cush these things are? LOL

I'm not set up quite yet for mass production but it is close. So I just wanted to throw this out to you guys as an FYI.

I'm also working on a seat much like this one only the door side bolster will actually mount on the door. That will allow entry to the vehicle much easier and when the door is closed it will give you all the support as a serious off road competition seat.
A few Pics:

And this is all I can show ya of the Bengels A.S.S. System (Air Suspension Seating) System until the patent pending is completed.

I have a customer that wants some reinforcement done on the front of a 66 Mustang that he is building for a customer of his. He asked me to build some sort of dash bar behind the dash to then run downbars out through the fire wall to the front of the chassis, but the problem comes in that there really isn't any room behind the dash for a dash bar. I haven't been able to find any pictures of this style reinforcement on mustangs, the closest I've come is a nova setup like this...

These seem to just bolt to the firewall itself. I would assume with some sort of sandwich plate on the inside.

Does anyone have any Ideas for me as to the best way to go about making a reinforcement like this to an early Mustang? The front suspension on the car I am working on has been replaced with a Mustang II style front suspension that I welded in for him already so there is no need to worry about the stock spring/shock towers being in the way (just smooth inner fenders like the above nova).

I would think that just attaching the downbars to the firewall might cause the firewall to crack out down the road but maybe I'm wrong, I haven't had much experience with mustang unibodies. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanx,
Jaysin

I bought a replacement for a 10,000# winch that was stolen. This new one didn't come with a receiver mount like the last one. So I decided to make one with some scavenged metal that I got dumpster diving. Now don't go dumpster diving without asking permission first, as that's considered stealing.
I've noticed that the cable likes winding up on one side most times so I decided to try to do something about this. I made the mount swivel ~ 45 degrees. And then I had a eureka moment and decided to make an arm that will guide the cable as it is being wrapped up. I'll only use this once I've gotten unstuck, as I don't like the idea of a cable snapping while I'm standing in front of it. The idea is to wind the cable and use the e-brake to put a little tension on it as it's winding.
Here's some pics;
I used 1/4" plate for the main portion [the bend was already there], the uprights are 7/16" angle and the holes are tapped for the fair-lead

test fit

I will round the end of this piece of 3/4" pipe

and attach it to this

The pipe with the J-hook that guides the cable will go threw a hole in the top bar on the mount; the end of the coat hanger wire is in that hole

I'll update in a few days and tell you how it works,
