All in all, in my opinion, not bad for an amateur. Rear bumper's next, and I got a sweet idea in my head for it. It involves many spikes...

I finally got replacement parts for my welder that I bought off a guy after it fell of his cart and broke, now I need to figure out how to wire it. The welder manual says the plug is a 3 wire 50A 6-50P:

but the plug that's actually installed (by the previous owner I think) looks to be a 14-50P except there's no terminal coming out of the half round hole, just the three blades.

My outlet (laundry room off the garage) is a 4 wire 14-30R and the circuit has two 30A breakers joined together. One breaker for each hot, right?

So my question is, when I get a plug to fit into my receptacle, how do I wire the welder to the plug? Do I just not connect anything to white? Just match up red and black to the straight blade terminals and ground to the half round one? I need to learn more about home wiring...

Really...I've been bored at work, waiting for layoffs to take affect and reading news sites, and I saw a link to this site in my Favorites folder on my laptop. I have no idea how or who put it in there, but here I am. My projects are a road race/autocross Mustang that has 99% of the cage work done, and I've moved on to doing all the electrical stuff. Fired the car up last week. My other "Project" is my DD Bronco that I put a roll cage in over the July 4th weekend. It sees alot of trail use, and the body flex was getting bad, so I caged her not just for that, but to also get experience building a cage around a full interior. Also to put to use the lessons and mistakes I learned from when I caged my Mustang...like cutting holes in the floor to do a 360* weld on the tubes. I have pics, but not on this computer. I do have build journals on my Facebook profile, if anyone's interested.

I need some on site, secure storage, for parts, materials, rolling chassis and such.
I have toyed with building something but the cost and dealing with building permits etc, the cost adds up!
I called and I can buy a 40-foot shipping container, delivered, for a reasonable cost per square foot, not permits required!
However, I am concerned with condensation in cold weather. IF anyone has experience with these metal boxes in cold climates I would like to hear what you have learned...

i've seen front mounted receivers used for winching of course most of these yota's are higher than mine which has no suspension lift.

i picked up a draw-tite 3500lb receiver earlier today for 20 bucks i saw it sitting and they didn't put a price on it. it didn't fit the back but fit the front and i came up with this idea

i mounted it up and started drilling the holes to use the factory bumper mount, also found come C channel i had laying around to use as a brace for the cross frame as i know it's weak. tested out the steering and what lil flex i had in the front to see how i have to trim off the receivers brace.

Q: bad idea to use as a winch mount? and build a bumper off of(not really a bumper more like a modified brush bump guard or a small tree ram

This is a project im building for a customer, it started life out as a 91 toyota land cruiser, 2.4 turbo diesel. he just gave me a cut up body and rolling chassis to work with. chopped everything off bar the bulk head and the front floor pan.
the customers plans are big but his wallet is small so he wants to build it over time. first thing is to make this thing a tube buggy, and then we can talk engine and suspension.

started out life like this last week.

and then i got may hands on it. this is the start of the sliders and main hoop.

then i added another hoop, this one is 1'' smaller all round to give a small step down and back. youll see why later. you can kinda see the step in the 3rd pic.

then made the front legs, they have a small rotation to still give it a cab look.
they also slope down about 1.5'' towards the front.

then choped off the rear floor pan and startet to make a rear tray.

now the reason im stepping all these bars and using two hoops laying back is because im trying to get a subtle roundly lay'd back look. ill let yee be the judge. :D

so thats prety much where i left it this evening. ill keep updating
as the build prgresses. thanks

I debated adding some triangulation to the main hoop, but for now just added the horizontal bar to tie it all together.

I have a buddy who has talked me into my empty bay to do an engine swap in his already converted Chevy 350 / 350 trans / 205 transfer case thats is in his Toyota 4x4. Now this is my question............... when I pulled out the trans to get it rebuilt as it was the bigger issue than the motor the way who ever had done the conversion in the first place had a crossmember under the adapter between the transfer case and the transmission. so the 205 tranfer case is hangin off the adapter and the trans mount also is not bein used. Now for me most of my work has been with dune buggy frames but it simply dosen't make sense that the only mount for the tranny and a 205 transfer case is simply under the adapter between the 2. so I throw myself to the mercy of the OFN and what would you all say is the right way to have this mounted if you were doin the conversion???

Seeing this really turned my Monday around. Thanks to the little bird that clued me in. DS contacted me a while back, but I didn't know we'd get ink!

Hopefully nobody gets too mad about me scanning this in... I'm just excited as hell to see my product make a national (international?) magazine. :grinpimp: Congrats to Cris @ Bend Tech too, although something tells me this isn't his first rodeo!

This is my first cage project and i'm trying to plan everything out before i start. Its going on my yj i still use the original dashboard and gauges. My quesion is how should i do the a-pillars so that i can still remove the dash for service and get the full doors on? Ive seen the flat pieces in catalogs that fit between the door and the side of the dash but they seem like a weak link. Any suggesions or pics would be greatly appreciated. One more thing, i wanted to use plates at the floor to make it removable, has anyone had any problems with those in a hard tipover? Its a trail rig, i don't do high speed stuff, but strength and safety is first priority.
